Amiga: The TiNA Project (Tecnologia iNformatica Amica)

Hi everyone,

From Italy comes an ambitious and interesting project called TiNA (Tecnologia Informatica Amica).

TiNA is a new board that is being designed and developed in Italy by a team of Amiga enthusiasts. Their main goal is to make a complete implementation of the Amiga 500 and/or Amiga 1200 by the use of powerful FPGAs. They want to make this come true with a 68020 CPU that is even more powerful than any existing 68060 CPU. It’ll be able to execute 2 in-order instructions per clock cycle, but at 400 (!) MHz instead of 50. On their website they state that there is a lot of work to do when it comes to this and they need to investigate fully if the FPGA will allow such features.

Just like the old Amiga tradition, there will be several independent FPGAs to  handle sound, graphics and so forth.

They aim to maintain full backward compatibility, which I think is great.

As far as I’ve understood, they are bringing up AROS Vision 68k as an OS for this computer, which is a good choice.

I really hope these guys can pull this off, especially after what happened to the Natami-project. If they do, I’ll be first in line to purchase one or more boards. :D

If you’d like to check out TiNA further, please have a look at the official website of the project:

Let’s cross our fingers and wish the developers the best of luck with TiNA! This must succeed! :)

Thanks for reading and for visiting my blog. Until next time! :)

ACube Systems: Top Secret

The official ACube logoACube Systems is an Italian company that is engaged in the fields of sale, distribution and engineering of hardware and software for both mainstream and alternative platforms. For people into the Amiga, they are mostly known for producing the different Samantha (SAM) motherboards, which are compatible with the AmigaOS 4 operating system. They’ve also distributed the Minimig. This is a hardware emulator of an Amiga 500 were the whole chipset is re-implemented in a FPGA. The Minimig has been and continues to be popular among people interested in retro gaming.

Recently there was an announcement about something labelled as “top secret” on the official homepage of ACube Systems. There was also a full-page advertisement about the same thing in the last issue of Amiga Future. I’ve included a snapshot of the announcement below:

ACube - Top Secret

Something is coming from ACube, but what is it? (Picture taken from http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=home)

It is clear from the announcement that ACube Systems has something exciting in store for us, but it’s of course impossible to know for sure what it is. People have been discussing the announcement on different forums, like Amigaworld.net, Amiga.org and Amigans.net, and the guesses are both diverse and interesting.

We can see from the snapshot that there’s a polaroid photo at the bottom-right of the folder. If you look closely, you’ll see a boingball. At the top-right, you can see the number “500″. Now, what does this mean? The first thing that pops into my head is the Amiga 500. Could it be that ACube will release a Samantha motherboard in an Amiga 500 replica case? Or perhaps they are launching an alternative to the AmigaOne X1000 in co-operation with A-EON Technology called the AmigaOne X500?

As mentioned earlier in this post, there has been plenty of guesses in the various discussion forums. Here’s a few of them:

- The Natami priced at 500 EUR (Natamix at Amigaworld.net)

- The SAM500 motherboard, in succession to the SAM460 (Kas1e at Amigaworld.net)

- Price drop for existing SAM-systems (Amiboy at Amigaworld.net)

- PCI-card to run classic Amiga software on AmigaOS4 (Metalheart at Amigaworld.net)

- Amiga tablet called the “Samlet” (Hypex at Amigaworld.net)

- “This doesn’t seem like much of a mystery to me. With the X1000 around the corner, it only makes sense to introduce a SAM-powered AmigaOne named X500 – and who better to build and assemble it than ACube.” (Thom_Holwerda at Amigaworld.net)

Many interesting guesses there. :)

I for one have a gut-feeling that agrees with Thom Holwerda. Could it be that a new machine called the AmigaOne X500 will see the light of day? Quite a few people, also here on this blog, have been sceptical of the pricing of the upcoming AmigaOne X1000. It will be expensive, no doubt about that. There might therefore be room for an entry-level alternative from ACube that is cheaper.

We’ll get all the answers on the 19th of September 2011! I certainly look forward to that. It will be very interesting to see what ACube Systems has in store for us. Then we’ll get to know who had the best guess as well.

What are you guesses? Please feel free to leave a guess below.. :) Thanks!

Natami: The Third Natami MX Board

The developers of the Natami are flexing their muscles. On the third of July 2011, Thomas Hirsch reported that he had assembled the third MX board. Here’s a picture taken from a thread on the official Natami discussion forum.

The third Natami MX board

The third Natami MX-board in all its glory

This is very good news. It’s great to see the team making this kind of progress! Can we hope for a release sometime around Christmas 2011? If yes, that would be a dream come true.

Mr. Hirsch did also confirm that the on-board Amiga 500 keyboard connector was working properly. This means that you can use your old Amiga 500 keyboard on the Natami. It will make it easier for case modders to install the Natami motherboard into an empty Amiga 500 case. Wouldn’t that be cool?

If you want more information, you can follow the ongoing discussion among the Natami forum members by clicking this link.

You can also read about the Natami in my previous posts, which can be found here:

Announcement: Amiga 600 FPGA Accelerator

Amiga 600

The Amiga 600 - Still being developed for in 2011

Good news for those of you that are interested in powering up your Amiga 600. An Amiga enthusiast named Igor Majstorovic has spent a lot of time working on a new FPGA-based turbo-card for this computer. It is based on the Tg68-core, which will be used in the next version of the Minimig.

Majstorovic’s new accelerator has not been released yet, but he is currently waiting for a prototype to arrive. It will interesting to follow the progress in the weeks to come.

There are currently discussions going on about this project at Amiga.org and the English Amiga Board (EAB). Please head over there to find more information.

A video about the project has been uploaded to YouTube. You can check it out below:
