Hi guys,
Not long ago, I was inspired by my friend (Coder) over at the Bucket Diary to get my Amiga 1200 Online again. My machine has been offline for quite some time now due to various circumstances, but I aim to change that during the coming days.
One of the big hurdles to overcome is the fact that I’ve only got 2MB of RAM in my Amiga 1200 these days. My memory card had a battery leakage and since I’m not competent in fixing that kind of stuff, I sold it to an Amiga fan in Poland that could extend its life. 2MB of RAM is not that bad, but it definitely limits the possibilities of what one can do Online. Since my aim is to download files of FTP’s and access Aminet, 2MB should be enough. 😉
I’ve got two network cards that I can use. The first one is a PCMCIA WLAN card from AmigaKit. This is the card I used to get my A1200 Online in the past. I also have a regular PCMCIA Ethernet card, which gives me the option of using cabled Internet. My router at home is set up with WPA2 security and I’m not exactly keen on changing it to WEP, as it is much less secure. The reason it must be changed is that the network card on the Amiga doesn’t cope with WPA/WPA2. I’m therefore considering going cable.
As for software, I’ve got the EasyNet package from AmigaKit. It contains all you need to get your classic Amiga Online. 🙂
It will for sure be interesting to see how an Amiga 1200 with 2MB of RAM will handle the Internet. I’m going to take some pictures (most probably a video) of it downloading from FTP’s, visiting websites and perhaps using IRC, so please stay tuned! 😉

It can fail, actually. But when I try use Amiga emulator couple of times it was on duty well.
Byt it’s not MY counter. ( since I’m not a programmer… ) It’s simple extremetracking.com one.

Oh wow, would love to see some piccys/video of this in action. I’ve never had any of my Amiga’s online before so would be interested to see how this works etc.

Sounds great. 🙂 I gave Genesis a try, but ran out of memory unfortunately. Having only 2MB of RAM is a bit of struggle to say the least. My old 030 had 32MB, which helped a lot. 😉 You don’t happen to know where one can download the old Amosaic browser? Have a hard time finding it. I figured that browser must be good for low-mem configs. Thanks.

i have a little 3mb free and I can navigate very well for a little time, then…the Amiga run out of memory. I want to do a boot floppy where I can load only a minimal configuration…

That sounds like a good idea. Have you tried the network boot-disk? You can find it here: http://jpv.wmhost.com/NetworkBootDisk/. I’m sure you can customize it for your needs. Hope that was of help.
3MB of free memory sounds like a dream for me now. 🙂 I really must invest in a new card soon – I can feel the hunger! 😀

Thanks a lot, friend. I did a test with that boot disk and it is a good tool. But I want to make a minimal disk based on Genesis tcp because the default Amiga tcp doesn’t work for me.

That sounds like an interesting idea. Genesis is a nice piece of software. If you make that boot-disk, then I’m very interesting in trying it out. 🙂

Wow, an Amiga on the internet! Even though I’ve owned a few over the years, not once have I hooked one to the net. I do remember having one accessing a BBS back in the day though…

When I had a turbo-card for my 1200 (68030 CPU clocked at 40mHz with 32MB of RAM), Internet worked quite nicely. Now I’ve only got 2MB of RAM, which is a very little to say the least, but I’m positive it’ll work out. 😉
