Today I thought I’d continue writing about the Plipbox device that I’ve installed in my Amiga 1200. It’s great having the Amiga Online again!

Telnet and BBSes

Having access to the Internet is helpful, but it can also be interesting to visit BBSes through Telnet. Did you know that there are still many BBSes operating today, in 2019, and that there are several hosted on Amiga computers?

I visited the website called Telnet BBS Guide and searched for Amiga. The search returned many results, including these:

So, how can one access such a BBS using the Amiga? Assuming you have a network card installed and a TCP/IP package set up (I recommend Roadshow), you can go to Aminet and download DCTelnet Client 1.6 from here:

Once it is downloaded, unpack the .LHA archive and run the install-script. Follow the prompts and when it is done, reboot your Amiga and start up again. Double-click the DCTelnet icon and the program starts. Then click on the big “Connect” icon inside the program and enter the address of the BBS you want to visit, for example “absinthebbs.net,1940”. “1940” is the port number. DCTelnet will then hook you up with the BBS and you will have to log in or create a new user.

There are many alternatives to DCTelnet, but I have not tested them yet. DCTelnet worked fine for me without any fuzz during installation, so very happy about that. There are, however, probably more advanced clients out there, so will keep an eye out for alternatives. 😉 If anyone has a client to recommend, I’d be very grateful if you could post a comment below. So, what can one do on these BBSes? You can download files, play games, chat with other Amiga enthusiasts, look at ASCII- or ANSI-art, find information on everything from programming to game guides and a lot more! Plenty of possibilities and everything can be done on your Amiga. 🙂
