Amiga: KCS (Kolff Computer Supplies) Power PC Board 500

Hi guys,

My collection of Amiga items will expand with a new item in one of the coming days. I’ve purchased a hardware PC emulator for the Amiga 500. It is called the KCS Power PC Board 500 revision 4.2. Bought it from a guy called Flip at AmiBay.

This piece of kit will make my Amiga 500 able to run old-school PC stuff. I’m looking forward to try out some old games on it. Might even test out a small demo or two! I’ll let you know when it is up and running. 🙂

The board has 1MB of RAM installed, but it can utilize additional memory assigned to it from the Amiga’s own memory according to the Big Book of Amiga Hardware. The card supports the use of hard disks, floppy drives and joystick ports in PC mode. Quite cool!

Now, my Amiga 500 has been collecting dust for a while now. It’s the Amiga 1200 that sees usage on a regular basis. I think that is a bit sad, so I’m going to bring back the Amiga 500 again. It will not replace the 1200 of course, but I’m going to use it from time to time. Most probably I’ll add some bits and bobs to it over the coming months. The KCS Power PC Board is the first upgrade I’ve bought for the 500 in a long time. I’m now thinking of getting a hard disk for it, along with some extra memory. 🙂

So, have any of you tried a hardware PC emulator on the Amiga before? If yes, how did it work? Also, do you still use your Amiga 500?

  1. Some good old Dutch know how. Read about it a lot in my magazines but never got one. Looking forward to your next write up on when you have it. 🙂

  2. My mind was blown when I read up on the Amiga when I started hunting for an A500 and found out about these PC emulator cards. As someone who missed the Amiga boat and went from a C64 to a PC, I had no idea these kind of devices exists! Looking forward to the review.

    • Good to hear that you’re looking forward to the review. 🙂

I’ve never tried such an emulator myself before, so it will for sure be exciting. The closest I’ve got is a software PC emulator called PC Task. It was very slow on my 68030 Amiga, but it worked. 🙂

  3. I also slipped a KCS powerboard into my collection. Now I need to figure out how it works. Same here, read a lot about back in the days but never had the chance to get one until now.

    • Hi Berry,

Many thanks for your comment. 🙂 Much appreciated!

Congratulations on your KCS board. Hope you’ll enjoy it once it is up and running. There were a lot of cool hardware upgrades for the Amiga back in day, and quite a few of them were hardware PC and MAC emulators.

      Nice blog you’ve got btw!
