The Old School Game Blog is basically about everything related to retro gaming. You can therefore expect to find the following on this site:

  • Reviews of classic games and hardware
  • News and comments concerning retro-related projects (like the Natami and The Multiple Classic Computer)
  • Coverage on everything that has to do with my all-time favourite computer, namely the Amiga
  • Thoughts and opinions about the past and present in the world of gaming
  • A big serving of sweet nostalgia

About me

Hi! I’m Puni (AmigaOldskooler), admin of Old School Game Blog (since 2011), Gaming on AmigaOS 4 and organizer of Void – The Amiga Demo Group. On Xbox and Steam I mostly use PuniVOD or PuniVoid as a nickname.

My first computer was an MSX, a Spectravideo SVI-738 X’Press, which I purchased at a Spaceworld store in Tønsberg, Norway, in the 1980’s. I still have this machine in my collection and I usually take it for a spin a couple of times a year to play a few games and to check that everything is working properly.

After the MSX, I entered the world of Amiga with an Amiga 500 purchased at the Spaceworld store mentioned above. It was love at first sight and since then I’ve been hooked on everything Amiga. 

In 1994 it was time to upgrade to an Amiga 1200. I remember being a bit disapointed about several games not working, like Street Rod for example, but after a while I found solutions like Relokick 1.3, which helped a bit. It was not before I installed a 2.5″ 120 MB HD that the computer become a dream machine though. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities in terms of creativity, gaming and general computing.

I think it was in 1995 that I began looking into the Demoscene. Had a few demos on floppy disks and loved watching them, so naturally I wanted to get hold of more. The solution was to contact people through snail-mail and exchange demos, packs, intros and more on floppies through the post. In 1996 I got in touch with Strife of Apathy and he opened many doors to the Demoscene for me. The first demo party I visited was in February 1996 if I remember correctly. It was called Distortion and was hosted by TEC (The Enterprise Crew). The party took place in a gymnastics hall on the countryside in a place called Barkåker.  Have very good memories from this event, especially since I met people like Loaderror and Frequent from Ephidrena there for the first time, as well as Duck-Hunter, Romeo and Chauple from various groups.

The years went by and I was a member of groups like Apathy, Mad Wizards, Nah-Kolor, Gods, Absurd, Instinct, X-Factor and Void. Visited many demo parties, including The Party in Denmark, The Gathering in Norway, several Kindergarden events near and in Oslo and so forth. During this time I was mainly a swapper / mail-trader, but also did some programming, writing articles for diskmags and compiling a demo pack.

I’ve been a member of Void now for probably 20 years or something and the group is still going strong.  We released a brand new demo for Amiga at Revision 2021, as well as a 64 KB intro. Feel free to check out our website at amigavoid.wordpress.com to see what we are up to these days.

I mentioned above that I bought an Amiga 1200 in 1994. This computer actually stopped working and broke down in the year 2000, so I had to buy a new one (one of those Amiga 1200 Magic Packs) from Datakompaniet in Trondheim, Norway. This computer is still with me today and it actually got repaired and recapped by RetroService in Larvik a couple of years ago. These days it is without expansion card, just a HD installed, as I tend to use my MorphOS system more these days. Yes, my main Amiga in 2021 is a PowerBook G4 running the Amiga-like OS MorphOS, hehe. It is a great system, fast and responsive to work with and with lots of interesting games, utilities and creative applications (Hollywood and Hollywood Designer). Thanks to the amazing efforts by the developer Jadacaps, MorphOS has an updated web browser compatible with modern websites, as well as an up to date e-mail client called Iris. If you have an old PPC Mac lying around, consider putting MorphOS on it to bring it back to life.

Beside the Demoscene, I do also like gaming. Favorite genres are open world RPG’s like the Elder Scrolls series and the Fallout series, as well as regular and real-time strategy games. Also enjoy point and click adventures like Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park. Gems of War is another favorite – this is a puzzle-RPG hybrid, with upgradable characters, weapons, kingdoms and so forth.

      I think it’s cool that you used the “portable” Commodore computer in the past. That is a legendary machine. You might be interested to hear that Commodore is still alive. Some groups of people are even developing games for the C64! Imagine that! 🙂

  7. Thanks for stopping by The Meta Bard and giving my Wheel of Fortune pic a like! I’m an avid retro gamer, particularly for PC. We got our first computer, a Tandy 1000, in November of 1987 and my love for classic (well at that time they were new and “cutting-edge”) games began. Awesome to see this blog up. Keep up the good work!

  11. Just sumbled over your blog by searching for Amiga stuff, awww ♥ *nostalgia-mode on*

    Still have an 500 & a 1200 here with a handful of original games. Nearly all are still I’m good condition, some few died through years, f.e. Turrican 3. 8-(
    I lost some great Thalion pearls during a moving, that’s awful…

    Nice work, for sure I’ll hang around here from time to time 😀
