As some of you may know, the Gold 2.8 update for the Amiga Vampire cards was released yesterday.
Today I decided to install the update on my Amiga 500, as I have an older core in my Vampire card.
Here are three pictures of my Amiga 500 and the Vampire board:
First I had to get the update, which can be downloaded from this webpage:
Since I have the V2+ 500, I got the X10 .exe update.
I downloaded the .LHA archive and transferred it to the HD in the Amiga 500. Then I unpacked it and double-clicked on the icon of the update. The program then flashed the card in a minute or so. Turned the computer on and off and then Gold 2.8 was up and running. 🙂
I really like this way of updating the core, just running an executable file, no need for any extra equipment.
It is very important to read the instructions in the archive before you flash though, so please do that first. 😉
The performance of the core is very good as one can expect from the Vampire cards. The speed is amazing and most stuff runs well. Sadly I only have 512 KB of Chip-RAM in my A500, so that limits the usage, but update 3.0 is supposed to increase this to 4 or 8 MB! 🙂 Awesome!
I’ve made a couple of quick videos with my mobile phone of the Vampire in action. First one shows an intro by Dekadence and the other the intro to Elite 2 Frontier. The sound is a bit low in both and you can probably hear my breathing as well, hehe.
Now I’m looking forward to continue testing various software with the card. I also look forward to the release of the 3.0 core which will provide more Chip-RAM. 😉
Thanks for reading and have a great Sunday! 🙂
