Hi everyone,
It is Sunday morning and time for a new post here on the Gaming on AmigaOS 4 blog. ๐
I was thinking about different operating systems today and the fact that many of them have a game or two included. Windows is well known for Space Cadet, Minesweeper and of course Solitaire (which is even included in the newest versions). MorphOS has titles such as Diamonds and PixelCross, while macOS has Chess. So, how about AmigaOS 4.x? Any games included? Sadly no.
Whilst browsing OS4Depot I came to think of a card game I’ve played in the past, which is called Soliton. It is, as the name probably indicates, a type of solitaire. Wouldn’t it be nice if AmigaOS included such a game? It is not a big deal, but would be fun nonetheless. ๐
Sometimes when you are waiting for huge files to finish unpacking or a big file to be downloaded, it is convinient to have a small game to pass the time with. So AmigaOS 4 developers, how about including a little gem in the next release? ๐ Nudge, nudge.. Hehe…
Now, let us have a look at what the game Soliton has to offer.

The game can be downloaded from OS4Depot here. To install it, right-click on the archive and choose either “Extract here” or “Extract to”. Once that is done, head over to the location you unpacked it to and double-click on the icon.

Once the game starts, you will see a familiar solitaire screen with several options.
There are two game modes, Klondike (my favorite) and Freecell.

I think it looks very nice graphically and the menus are easy to navigate and understand.
As for the gameplay, it is what you’d expect of card games such as this. No surprises there. ๐ It is worth mentioning that is has drag and drop of cards, which is nice.
The great thing about Soliton though, is that you can change the appearance of the cards. The sets of cards are loaded via datatypes, and you can easily install new ones by copying them to the graphics directory. You can then add them in the menu of the game. There are plenty of decks available at Aminet.net if you want to check it out. I installed a set called “Amiga Deck”, which looks brilliant! You can see it below:

Nice, isn’t it? ๐
The team has also included a very comprehensive guide to the game and how to configure it. This is in the AmigaGuide format and contains everything you need to know about Soliton.

I have only positive things to say about Soliton. It is a nice title to have on the HD if you just want to relax a bit with a game of solitaire, for example when you are waiting for something. ๐ Having the option of changing the card decks is cool and you can even make your own decks if you want to have something in a specific style.
Thanks for reading and see you in another post here on the Gaming on AmigaOS 4 blog! ๐
