Gaming on AmigaOS 4.1: Awaker (Poison / HunoPPC)

Hi there and welcome to a new game review on the Gaming on AmigaOS 4.1 blog. πŸ™‚

Today I’ll be reviewing a small game called Awaker. It was developed by Poison (concept and code), Genevois (graphics) and Alexel (music). It was ported to AmigaOS 4 by HunoPPC, who is famous for bringing a lot of cool games to the platform.

The game is freely available for download at either HunoPPC’s website or OS4Depot. It should work on all AmigaOS 4 setups, including emulation with WinUAE.

Once you have downloaded the file, extract it to a location of your choice. Right-click on the icon of “awaker.lha” and select “extract to”. Once unpacked, head on over to its location and double-click on “AwakerOs4.exe” and the game will start right away.

So, what is this game about?

It’s basically a small racing game where two dots on the screen are competing to reach the end of the level first. You use the keyboard (arrow keys) to control your character. There are obstacles in your way, so take care or you’ll be sent back to where you started. You will also be penalized for starting too early (there is a countdown to start each level and you must wait until it has finished, or you will be unable to move for a few valuable seconds in-game).

Now, let’s have a look at how the game played when I gave it a go.

The rules are listed here.
The credits.
It’s time to start playing! I selected the easiest one. πŸ™‚
The game is on!
The first level.
Reached the second level.
Here is the third level.
The fourth level is here.
The game is over.

So, what are my impressions of the game?

As you can see, the game runs in a window on Workbench. It is very colorful and nice to look at! It is also relaxing to play, even though it is a racing game. πŸ˜‰ I think it is good for sessions where you just want to play something for a short amount of time to relax and take it easy. Audio is also very good. All in all it was a good gaming experience. πŸ™‚
