Quake 2 – Digital Version for AmigaOS 3 (68k) Released!

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting the Old School Game Blog. 🙂

I’m currently working on the AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup for April 2024 but did notice some news concerning the Quake 2 port for Amiga. Thought I’d make a quick post sharing it with you.

The picture is from the webshop of Alinea Computer

It turns out that a digital download version is now also available for AmigaOS 3 (68k) from Alinea Computer in Germany. Steffen Häuser has done the porting and has implemented numerous features that have not yet been available for any Quake 2 port for 68k.

Please read on for the full news:

Quake 2 now also available as digital version for AmigaOS 3 (68k)

Alinea Computer is very pleased to be able to offer the version for AmigaOS 3 (68k) as a digital download in addition to the Quake 2 version for AmigaOS 4. Steffen Häuser is responsible for the porting and has implemented numerous features that have not yet been available for any Quake 2 port for 68k.

In addition to supporting the various Mission CDs and MODS, the realised the playback of the soundtracks as OGG Vorbis (for Vampire V4 instead as AIFF files) and multiplayer/network gaming.

Please note that in order to run the 68k version of Quake 2, the data files of the PC version are required. These can be downloaded via Steam at a favourable price.

Free MODS and Mission CDs will be available in the next few days in the Aminet will be available.

Here are all the features and system requirements at a glance:

Features

– 68040, 68060 and 68080 compiled version (during installation selectable)

– MiniGL and Software Renderer

– full support for Mission CDs The Reckoning and Ground Zero

– Ports to the unofficial mission CD Zaero and to approx.50 multiplayer mods will be published on the Aminet in the near future, these Downloads require the new version of Quake 2,. they do not work with other ports

– For Vampire users: The USB gamepad of the Vampire is supported

– For Vampire V4 users: Background music is played via AIFF (the Ogg Vorbis music files of the Gog/Steam version of Quake2 will not be played in the 080 version. converted to AIFF format during installation)

– For PiStorm users: Background music is played via Ogg Vorbis (requires the Gog or Steam version of Quake 2, where the Ogg Vorbis files are included)

– For owners of Classic Amigas: Support of PSXPort adapters for the Connecting a Playstation gamepad

System requirements

– Software: AmigaOS 3.x and the data files from Steam, Gog or CD version.

That was all for now. Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you in the AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup for April in a couple of days. 🙂
