AmigaOne XE with AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition: First Impressions

amigaoneny

Hello there,

Thanks for visiting Old School Game Blog, hope you’ll enjoy your stay! πŸ™‚

Some of you may have noticed on Twitter that I got hold an AmigaOne XE with G3 CPU a while back. Bought it on eBay from a Dutch seller and it arrived quickly and in very good condition. πŸ™‚

Here is the specs as it was when it arrived:

AmigaOne XE G3 800 MHz
AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-Release
256 MB RAM
40 GB HDD
DVD-ROM/CDR Drive
Radeon 7500 Graphics Card
Big Tower

Since the computer came with AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-Release installed, I erased it and replaced it with the latest version of the OS. I did give the old release a go, as I had never tried such an early version of AmigaOS 4.x before. πŸ™‚ I must say it has come a long, long way since then! The Pre-Release was a bit unstable (as you might expect) compared to 4.1 FE, which is rock solid.

I did also upgrade the RAM to 512 MB, since I had one available. My plan is to put in more RAM after a while, but the OS is not very memory hungry, so no rush.

I must say I’m very happy with the computer! After AmigaOS 4.1 FE got installed, it has been stable and a joy to use. I have spent quite a bit of time setting up the OS, downloading games, utilities, demos and more, as well as trying out various stuff. Here I’d like to mention the game Tower 57! Yes, if you did not know, Tower 57 is actually available on AmigaOS 4! The game plays ok and is fun on my machine, but needs a better graphics card to shine. πŸ˜‰ Also have Gorky 17 here, which I will install during the weekend. I’m eager to see how it runs. Oh, I must mention Amiga Racer also! Wow, what a cool racing game, with super music! πŸ˜‰

If you want to read more about the AmigaOne XE, a good place to start is on IntuitionBase.

Thanks for reading and for visiting my blog. See you soon in another post! πŸ™‚
